Violent Crime in California Hits Lowest Level Since 1967

You may or may not hear about it on the nightly news, but that’s some of the news that’s fit to print in this 2013 crime report by the California Department of Justice. Here are a few of the highlights:

• The rate of every category of violent crime and property crime decreased in 2013
• Violent crime fell to its lowest level since 1967
• All violent-crime categories saw double-digit decreases from 2008 to 2013
• Property crime rates fell over nine percent from 2008 to 2013

These California numbers appear to track a national trend of falling crime rates, and the national trend mirrors an international, twenty-plus-year trend that has cut across the developed world and weathered the economic recessions of recent memory.
